R - RZ

Bibliographer: Religion, Ethics & Society

Date Revised: September 14, 1998

General Purpose:

The Medicine collection in the Divinity Library is intended to support undergraduate, professional, and graduate programs; faculty research; and continuing studies by ministers in the areas of Religion and Personality, Ethics, and General Ministry studies. Purchases in Medicine for the Divinity Library consist of classic texts that have special significance for divinity studies, of texts that specifically address religious issues and Medicine, and of works written by those authors with a professional identity which is primarily in divinity studies.

Languages

English-language works are emphasized (95%) with German being the predominant of the other languages collected.

Geographic Areas:

The collection emphasizes materials from the United States but with some materials from Europe, Central and South America, etc.

Chronological Limits:

Over 95% of the materials have been collected since World War I. Only rarely will earlier materials be collected.

Types of Materials Collected:

Monographs and sets.

Journals and serials, including certain reports or proceedings of associations, societies, symposia, conventions, and others.

Dissertations on an occasional basis when the topic is of special faculty or student research interest.

Phonodiscs, films, and audio and video tapes in very rare cases.

Manuscripts on an occasional basis.

Other Factors:

Because Medicine is not directly divinity studies, the Divinity Library relies heavily upon the collections in other Vanderbilt libraries, especially the Medical Library. The number of titles listed below are only those within the Divinity Library. The stated levels are assigned merely to emphasize strengths and goals relative to other areas for the Religion and Personality , Ethics, and General Ministry studies, not to give an objective measure of the Divinity Library in relation to all available titles in the Library of Congress classifications in Medicine.
