COLLECTION POLICY: PHILOLOGY, LITERATURE
PA 1 - PA 8595
Bibliographer: Hebrew Bible/Judaica/New Testament
Date Revised: September 14, 1998
General Purpose:
The collection in this section of the Divinity Library is meant to provide the philological tools and literary resources for those who work primarily with Greek and Latin religious texts. As such, its purpose is to serve as a research tool shop for graduate students and faculty who conduct their research in these original languages.
Languages:
The primary texts are in Greek and Latin, the former predominating by far the more. Many of these texts have a facing English translation (a few have German and a few have French facing), in which case they are counted in the language of translation. In all, English represents 60% of the collection, German 20%, French 7%, and the rest are largely titles in the primary languages.
Chronological Limits:
There are no prescriptive limits. Most of the titles (59%) were published after 1950; 26% from 1901-1950; and 11% from 1851-1900. Three titles from the late 17 century and one published in 1557 deal with the classical and Byzantine periods.
Types of Materials Collected:
The policy is to collect dictionaries and lexical aids, serials, and monographs which are relevant to Religious Studies, particularly New Testament and Historical Theology. Of vital importance is the large collection of Greek grammars and lexical aids, and the Greek and Latin religious texts in the Loeb Classical Library Series.
Types of Material Excluded:
Material not directly related to the needs of students and faculty is not collected, but left to the collection development of the Central Library. Examples of such omissions are Yale Classical Studies Series, Harvard Classical Studies in Philology Series, and Latin Grammars.
Other Factors:
The predominance of titles in the collection related to the Greek language and literature, is due to the high demand for this material from those who work in Biblical Studies, particularly New Testament.
