Hermann Cohen (1842-1918) was
a "Neo-Kantian" philosopher and interpreter of Judaism who left his
professorship at the University of Marburg to teach at the Hochschule für die
Wissenschaft des Judentums in Berlin. Hermann Cohen's book "The Religion
of Reason from the Sources of Judaism" (Die Religion der Vernumft aus
den Quellen des Judentums) (1929) was a great inspiration to FR. Unfortunately,
it was not published until after Cohen's death.
