Sephardic Judaism refers to a stream of Jewry that traces its ancestry through Jews living in Spain and Portugal before the expulsion of 1492. Sephardim are to be distinguished from Ashkenazim by their liturgical practice, their pronunciation of Hebrew, and their prayer rites which have their roots in the Babylonian Diaspora.
