ALIM Instructions
(version 4.5)

This database can only be accessed from workstations within the Divinity Library.

Introduction: The Alim database contains key Islamic documents in both Arabic and English. One of its distinctive features is the ability to hear portions of the Qur'an recited.
On Startup: Begin with the menu on the right-hand side of the split screen. Select a library (e.g. Islamic Books) by double-clicking on the title. Select the appropriate work and portion of the work, and read to your heart's content.
Navigation:

To move back one screen from where you are, click the Backtrack button (arrow pointing upward with two dots to the right of it). This is different from the Forward and Backward arrows (next to the Backtrack button), which when present move forward and backward one page within the same work. However, the Backtrack button is not present in the "Qur'an in Arabic and Recitation" text. In this text, you must close the window to return to the previous window.

In the "Qur'an in Arabic & Recitation" text, you can use the drop-down menus in the upper-left corner of the screen to jump to a particular Surah or Ayah. Alternately, you can use the "Page" menu in the same location to jump to a particular page number in the Qur'an.

Recitation: If you are in the "Qur'an in Arabic & Recitation" text and wish to hear a particular Ayah recited, simply go to that Ayah (using the procedure outlined above) and click on the second button from the right (speaker with soundwaves coming from it) to hear that Ayah. To hear a continuous recitation from the current Ayah forward, click the "Recite" button and select "Continuous" rather than "One Ayah," then click the speaker button. To stop the continuous recitation, click the speaker button a second time.

To hear recitation in the "Arabic Comparison & Recitation" text, first select a Surah, then select an Ayah or Ruku. You will see two small icons with each Ayah. One is a speaker with soundwaves, and the other is a number 1 on a yellow background. Click the speaker to hear recitation. Click the number to jump to the Ayah for which comparative translations are being shown.

Please keep in mind that to actually hear the recitation you'll need to be on a workstation in Room 221, where the computers have speakers. If you wish, you can plug headphones into the jack on one of the speakers, which will allow you to listen without disturbing your neighbors. There is a set of headphones available for checkout at the circulation desk, or you may bring your own.
Images: The last library in Alim contains Islam-related images. Viewing these images is often made easier by eliminating the left-hand (Navigator) window. This can be done by clicking the rightmost of the three buttons in the lower right-hand corner (Article only). To restore the left -hand window, click the middle button (Navigator and Article).
Searching: It is possible to search only the English works in the database. If you need to search for an Arabic word, the Divinity Library has the Hanna Kassis Qur'an Concordance in the Reference Room (BP 133 K37 1983).

To search, click on the SEARCH tab at the bottom of the left frame (Navigation window). Type a word in the box under the "Look for:" heading, then click "Find." Double click any of the results to see the text. Your search word will be highlighted where it occurs.
Printing: To print the text you are currently viewing, click on the button with the printer (farthest right on the button bar at the top of the screen) and click OK. If you are in the "Qur'an in Arabic and Recitation" screen, the same button will appear as the third from the right.
How to Cite: The program does not offer bibliographic information on each work contained within it. However, you can access information for the program itself by selecting "Help-About" from the pull-down menus at the top of the screen.
