Search History in ATLA Religion Database

The database automatically saves all the searches you perform. To access previously executed searches, click on the Search History link that appears below the search boxes.

The Search History/Alerts section allows you a number of options:

  • rerun any previous search by selecting the View Results link in the "Actions" column;
  • revise a previous search by clicking on the Edit link, also under the "Actions" column;
  • delete any searches you don't want to save by using the checkbox next to the specific search(es) and clicking on the "Delete Searches" button above the search history list. If you want to delete all of your search history, use the checkbox next to "Select / deselect all" and then click the "Delete Searches" button;
  • combine searches (see below).

Combining Searches

The Search History/Alerts section allows you to combine the results of previously performed searches together. To combine searches,
  1. determine if you want the terms from the last search that you've done to be combined with terms in the search history. If you don't, you must first select the Clear button next to the search boxes. If you want your last search to be part of the combination of searches, do NOT select the Clear button;
  2. select the searches you want to combine by clicking the checkboxes next to each search;
  3. choose the "Search with AND" or "Search with OR" buttons above the search history. "Search with AND" will give you results where each result contains ALL of the terms you're searching; "Search with OR" will give you results where each result contains at least one of the terms you're searching.

Some examples:

  • In your search history, you have already performed one search on the subject "contemplation" and another on the subject of "prayer". You would now like to combine these searches so that you retrieve everything that has either "contemplation" or "prayer" as a subject. You would proceed as follows:
    1. click on the Clear button to clear the search boxes of any current search terms;
    2. click on the check box next to both the "prayer" search and the "contemplation" search;
    3. select the "Search with OR" button;
    4. the search will be executed.
  • In your search history, in addition to the searches on "prayer" and "contemplation", you've also done a search on the term "mysticism". Now you want to combine the searches so that the database retrieves everything that has the terms "prayer," "contemplation," and "mysticism." You would proceed as follows:
    1. click on the Clear button to clear the search boxes of any current search terms;
    2. click on the checkbox next to the searches for "contemplation," "mysticism," and "prayer";
    3. select the "Search with AND" button;
    4. the search will be executed.
