Instructions -- BibleWorks (Version 5.0) |
This database can only be accessed from within the Divinity Library.
On Startup: When you first start BibleWorks a menu will be displayed that will permit you to easily switch back and forth between the three most commonly used interfaces:
To change to a different mode, click on the Choose User Interface Mode button at the top of the toolbar.
Beginner Mode: The Beginner Mode is the easiest to use and is recommended for users not familiar with BibleWorks. To do a search, all you have to do is select the "Search" button to the right of the text box and enter the words you want to look up, and select search parameters from the choices presented in the dialog window. To look up a Bible verse, you click on the "Lookup" button and select the verse parameters from a series of List Boxes. Return to Top
Standard Mode: The Standard Mode presents you with a "Command Line" where you enter the verses or words you want to look up. This mode is similar to the Beginner Mode but the "Search" and "Lookup" buttons are replaced by a Command Line and a dropdown list box that determines how text entered on the Command Line is interpreted. Standard Mode also provides a window that displays either notes or morphology when the cursor is placed over a word in the Results window. Return to Top
Power User Mode: If you use BibleWorks every day, the Power User Mode is the mode that you may eventually want to use. It permits you to do searches with the minimum number of keystrokes. You enter verses and words to look up by entering them on the Command Line and preceding the text with a "Control" character: precede the text with a period, slash or single quote character to initiate AND, OR and PHRASE searches respectively. Power User Mode also provides a window that displays either notes or morphology (depending upon what Bible version is in the Results Window) when the cursor is placed over a word in the Results window. Return to Top
Browse and Multi-Version Displays: The Results Window in the upper left hand corner can display the text of verses in two modes -- a "Browse" mode that displays the entire text of the version being searched and a "Multi-Version" mode that displays a single verse at a time in as many versions as you like. To toggle between the two modes of display, double-click on the "Browse" label at the bottom of the BibleWorks screen or the "Browse" button (it looks like two footprints) on the buttonbar. Return to Top
Searches Available in All User Interface Modes:
Double-clicking
The easiest way to initiate a search is to double-click on a word in the Results Window. When you do this the word will be looked up and a list of verses will be displayed in the Command Center Results Verse List Box. Return
to Top
Clicking and Dragging
To do a search on a phrase in the Results Window all you
have to do is click and drag with the LEFT mouse button. Once the string
is highlighted click on it with the RIGHT mouse button. Choose "Search for
String" from the context menu that pops up and all occurrences of the phrase
will be found. Return to Top
Clicking on List Boxes
The Command Center contains a List Box which shows all the words in the current search version in alphabetical order. To look up the word and show all the verses where it occurs all you have to do is click on the word with the left mouse button. Return
to Top
Guided Searches
A quick and easy way to do word searches is to choose Tools/Easy Search from the Main Menu. This will open up the EASY SEARCH DIALOG. All you have to do is choose the version from the dropdown List Box, type the words you want to find, and choose the type of search from another List Box. This is the same Dialog Box that is opened when you click on the "Search" Button in Beginner Mode, but you don't have to be in Beginner Mode to use it. Return
to Top
The Command Line Assistant
The COMMAND LINE ASSISTANT was intended as a way to learn how to use the Command Line in Power User Mode, but it can function equally well as another menu-driven search interface. It is slightly more complex than the EASY SEARCH DIALOG, but it should be accessible to just about everyone. Return
to Top
Clicking on List Boxes
If the verse you want to look up is in a List Box, whether it is in the Verse List Manager, or in the Results Verse List in the Command Center, to look it up all you have to do is click on it. Return
to Top
Beginner Mode
If you are using the Beginner Mode Interface all you have to do is click on the big "Lookup" button. This will open a Dialog Box with book, chapter and verse List Boxes. Just use them to construct the verse reference and click on the "Lookup" button. There is even a menu-driven option for specifying the versions you want to display and how you want them displayed. Return
to Top
Standard Mode
In the Standard Mode you just select "Display this verse"
from the dropdown List Box above the Command Line. Then enter the reference
on the Command Line and click on "Go" (or press the <Enter> key).
The key to the left of the Command Line provides you with the tools to change
search and display versions. Return to Top
Browse List Boxes
Unless you have turned them off there will be a series of
dropdown List Boxes located in the header of each Results Window. To go
to a particular verse all you have to do is select the version, book, chapter
and verse from these list boxes. Return to
